How To Take a Screenshot On iPhone

When you are in the middle of scrolling through your iPhone and you see something that you want to share with others, this desire can easily be met by taking a screenshot with your iPhone. Then, you automatically have a picture that you can show to others or keep to yourself. Since screenshotting is an essential part of the whole iPhone experience, you should know how to make a screenshot. That is precisely what this guide intends to do. Here, you will discover how to screenshot with both the older and newer iPhone models.

How to Take a Screenshot With The Old iPhone Models (iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8 Plus)

First and foremost, it is important to note that making a screenshot with your iPhone heavily depends on the kind of iPhone model you have. Nevertheless, there is a basic rule of thumb that applies to most iPhone models and it goes like this:

  • Step 1: Unlock your iPhone and go to the specific image that you want to capture through a screenshot.
  • Step 2: Press your iPhone “Home Button” while simultaneously pressing the “Power ON and OFF Button”. You can find the latter on the right side of your iPhone. If you don’t hold them simultaneously, it will not work so this is truly of utmost importance.

These two steps are fundamentally the only two steps that you need to make a screenshot with your iPhone. If you follow these steps, you will notice that your iPhone will flash once. You will also hear a short clicking sound, so you will immediately know whether or not you have succeeded in screenshotting.

How To Take a Screenshot With The Newer iPhone Models (iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13 Pro Max)

Now, the above-mentioned method was the most prominent way to screenshot with your iPhone for years. However, the newer iPhone models, starting with the iPhone X, all have one thing lacking: a home button. They all function based on Face ID, which makes a home button irrelevant. And since the home button is a crucial element in the basic method to make a screenshot, it goes without saying that another method is necessary if you are in the possession of one of the newest iPhone models and you still want to screenshot something. If you do, follow these next steps instead:

  • Step 1: Unlock your iPhone and go to the screen that you want to immortalize through a screenshot.
  • Step 2: This second method also involves pressing the “Power ON Button” on the right side of your iPhone. Yet, you must simultaneously hold another button as well. Instead of the home button, this method involves simultaneously pressing the “Upper Volume Button”. You can find this button on the left side of your iPhone.

For the remainder, everything else remains the same as it once was. You will still see a flash and you will still hear a clicking sound, so you will know when your screenshot has actually been made.

With both the first and second methods to make a screenshot with your iPhone, you will immediately see a short version of your screenshot in the left lower corner of your iPhone’s screen as some sort of preview. If you click on that, you can edit your screenshot right away. Once you are done editing, you can either click on “Done”, or you can click on the trashcan icon. If you click on “Done”, you get multiple options. You can choose to save the screenshot to your picture library, or your files or you can choose to delete your screenshot. The trashcan icon also gives you the option to delete your screenshot.
